Typically pilots use two-way radios to communicate with their crew. They may also use radios to talk with Air Traffic Control services.
Radio types can be official "Aircraft-band", UHF/VHF business band, or the inexpensive FRS Family band.
Radio communications should be kept "short and sweet". Generally the pilot will initiate the first conversation. Most pilots will do a "radio check" after launch, and may provide the crew with heading and speed information. That conversation may sound like:
- Pilot: "{balloon name} to Crew"
- Crew: "This is {balloon name} crew"
- Pilot: "At 1000 feet heading North West at 5. Head toward Wal-Mart"
- Crew: "North West at 5. Heading toward Wal-Mart"
Remember that other people may need to use the same frequency, so keep the conversation short and concise. Repeating the key elements back to the pilot provides acknowledgement.
