Years Flying Balloons - 11

When you are not flying, what do you enjoy doing?

Flying airplanes! But even more fun than flying balloons and airplanes is spending time with the grandchildren! Also spend time maintaining some rental property to pay for this flying disease. Throw in a little golfing, woodworking and motorcycling.

Why did you become a pilot?

It's a disease! I was going to be an engineer, but stumbled in to a flying course at the U of I . . . found out flying was a lot more more fun!

What do you find is the most challenging about flying a hot air balloon?

I've been blessed with lots of good crew help but it's sometimes hard to get everyone coordinated when the good weather lines up. And where I fly in Pennsylvania, finding a good landing area can be tricky - but it's all part of the adventure!

Short description of something interesting that ballooning has allowed you to do?

Participating in the the Albuquerque International Balloon Festival was a highlight for me - last year was my first time there. Also, I've had three proposal flights in the balloon - those are always special and thankfully, the ladies said YES all three times. I even officiated the wedding for one of the marriages!

What do you most want the public to know/understand about hot air balloons and flying them?

Balloons just make people smile! After coordinating with the pilot or crew, feel free to help and ask questions!
