Years Flying Balloons - 1

When you are not flying, what do you enjoy doing?

Spending time with my family, walking and playing with the family dog. I enjoy tinkering with electronics and Amateur Radio. I also fly R/C airplanes and helicopters.

Why did you become a pilot?

Our family has been crewing for hot air balloons in events since the late 90s. We enjoy the sport so much that I decided to take it to the next level and become a pilot. It has been one of the most satisfying things I've ever accomplished. It just never gets old.

What do you find is the most challenging about flying a hot air balloon?

Navigation! Finding that level where the wind takes you the direction you want to go. Trying to achieve some control over something that you really don't have any control over. Navigation of a hot air balloon is truly a form of art.

Short description of something interesting that ballooning has allowed you to do?

Ballooning has allowed me to experience an amazing circle of friends and acquaintances. The pilots and crews are always friendly, and love to share their stories and experiences. I never stop learning from the people around me when ballooning.

What do you most want the public to know/understand about hot air balloons and flying them?

I want the public to know that Ballooning has something to give to all ages of people. The mesmerizing beauty of the aircraft, whether in flight, or on static display may provide you with visual enjoyment. But participating and getting involved in launches or chase crews doubles the enjoyment experience. Get involved in Ballooning!
